Seniors in the Cincinnati Public School District vaulted ahead of their counterparts on Ohio's Twelfth-Grade Proficiency Test in 2004, registering the highest passing rates among large-city school districts in all sections of the test. In improving results over last year across all subject areas tested, CPS 12th-graders also topped state averages in reading and writing. According to data released April 17, 2004, by the Ohio Department of Education, 44 percent of the CPS students taking the Twelfth-Grade Proficiency Test passed all five sections, an increase of 6 percentage points over last year. Performance in writing was particularly impressive, with a 94 percent passing rate that exceeded the state average of 89 percent. Strong gains in reading results, 17 percentage points higher than last year, boosted the CPS passing rate to 77 percent, surpassing the state average reading passing rate of 75 percent. On the other three sections of the test, CPS passing rates were within seven percentage points of the state average. Passing rates at three district high schools: Clark Montessori, the School for Creative and Performing Arts and Walnut Hills, were well above statewide performance results.
CPS seniors also upheld the district's recent track record of earning the highest passing performance among the state's large cities on the Twelfth-Grade Proficiency Test. The rates of district students passing all required sections of the test: writing, reading, mathematics, citizenship and science, ranged from 12 to 26 percentage points higher than those of Ohio's other seven large city school systems. The passing rates in Cincinnati also were from four to 13 percentage points higher than the next highest district's results across the five subject areas tested.
